DVDs, Movies, and Alternative Television
We generally do not advise television viewing for people with memory or cognitive disorders. To enjoy a movie, for example, one must remember the beginning of the story when the end is reached. Much of contemporary television programming can be hard to follow, violent, or just irrelevant.Sit-coms are, for the most part meaningless; on the other hand, laughter is good medicine so look for comedies that make your loved one laugh.
Old movies and recordings of old TV programs are a preferable alternative to newer releases; the viewer might remember it or even the actors. Also, tthemes, plots, etc. were simpler then. Cable and satelite services usually have a nice selection of old programming, and we like to recommend the Turner Classic Movies network.
We have a collection of DVDs chosen to provide enjoyable and beneficial alternatives to television. Respite videos are one of the first products designed exlusively for people with dementa. Each DVD in this set of thirteen involves the viewer in music, reminiscing, conversation, and even light exercise. Our Nature films showcase the beauty of our world accompanied by relaxing music.
