Aromatherapy and Alzheimer's Disease
There is growing evidence that certain essential oils have a positive, theraputic effect when used by people who have Alzheimer's. Lavender oil and Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) have a calming effect and have proven useful in treating agitation. Those oils can also promote better sleep. They should be used later in the day.
Peppermint oil and Rosemary are stimulating, and can improve appetite. Use these early in the day. Lemon Balm has even improved cognitive functioning in clinical tests. Other smells, although not strictly aromatherapeutic, can inspire strong reminiscences.
