Aids for Daily Living
Aids for daily living are products and therapies that help to extend ones independence by helping with activities of daily living that might otherwise be difficult or impossible.
Activities of daily living (ADLs) are those things we all need to do on a regular basis to ensure our health and well-being, those things that take up so much of our day and that we all take for granted until we can't do them anymore. Basic activities of daily living are activities that involve health and hygiene. By contrast instrumental activities of daily living are those abilities that allow a person to live independently. As Alzheimer's disease and other dementia progress, a person loses first the ability to perform the instrumental, then the basic activities. Much of the fear and the frustration associated with these conditions comes from this gradual loss of ability and the loss of independence that goes with it.
